I am reading a book by Valarie Kaur on Revolutionary Love that reminds me of you because it's about how love can be fierce just like activism . Thanks for speaking these truths and calling us to pay attention to these stories in such an empowered way! You are both gentle and so strong!!!

I had planned to major in French in college. I had seven years of French behind me, the help of a francophone mother, and was my high school's star French student, with a certificate from the Alliance Française signed by the French ambassador or consul to the UN (I'd have to dig it out now). My first semester French professor was puzzled and perhaps even annoyed that because of test anxiety I could not do better than a C or C+ in grammar quizzes even though I could speak with a good accent, discuss Cocteau and Voltaire with ease. She wanted me to fill in the blanks. She killed my joy. Luckily it returned when I visited France, Belgium, and Quebec.

I'm glad it returned! There's test French and then there's French French. I prefer the latter.
